Talaq, talaq, talaq

India’s highest court has ruled that Muslim men getting an instant divorce from their wives is against the country’s constitution and has banned the practice. In India, a Muslim man could divorce his wife by simply saying the Arabic word for divorce “talaq” three times. The practice is called “instant triple talaq”. In fact, he doesn’t even have to verbally say the words – he can send an email, a text message, or a Facebook message with “talaq, talaq, talaq”. However, an Indian Muslim woman wanting to get a divorce has to get permission from a Muslim authority or her husband.

The instant triple talaq has been banned in many countries with significant Muslim populations including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, and Indonesia. India has the world’s second largest Muslim population (after Indonesia).
