Wealth of 8 equals wealth of half of the world

According to the international organization Oxfam, the world’s richest 8 people have as much wealth as the world’s poorest 3.6 billion people (which is half of Earth’s population). These 8 people are Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Carlos Slim, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Amancio Ortega, Larry Ellison, and Michael Bloomberg. Together they are worth US$426 billion. That is $426,000,000,000!

Oxfam is urging world leaders to help make our planet a more equal place. The organization points out that the gap between the poor and the rich is getting wider. Last year in January, Oxfam had stated that the world’s richest 62 people had as much wealth as the world’s poorest half.

“A picture is worth a thousand words” is an English idiom. CNN’s image on the left tells this news story in one picture. Here is a video about the eight richest people.
