Fiji’s first gold medal

Fiji’s men’s rugby sevens team won the Olympic gold medal. What made this medal really special was that it was Fiji’s first Olympic gold medal ever. Fijians celebrated in their capital city Suva, and all over the nation. The country’s prime minister announced a national holiday to celebrate the win. Rugby sevens is a faster and shorter form of rugby, and was played for the first time at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Fiji is a small island nation in the Pacific Ocean. If you take a look at Fiji’s flag, you’ll notice the Union Jack in the upper left corner. The Union Jack is the flag of the United Kingdom. This is because Fiji was a British colony for about a hundred years.
