April 22 was Earth Day, a day to celebrate our Earth and also a day to remind ourselves about things we can do to keep our planet clean and healthy. This year’s theme was “Trees for the Earth”. One of the goals is to plant 7.8 billion trees by 2020. Why 7.8 billion? Earth’s population is predicted to be that number by 2020. A pact called the “Paris Agreement on Climate Change” was opened for signature on Earth Day this year at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, USA. Over 170 nations signed it. The aim of the agreement is for nations to work together to slow down global warming. The American actor Leonardo DiCaprio is a big supporter of the protection of Earth’s environment, and he was present at the Paris Agreement signing ceremony.
Earth Day is an annual event, and was first held in 1970.
