On March 2, a very large earthquake of magnitude 7.8 on the Richter scale struck off the western coast of Indonesia. It caused quite a panic, and many people near the area tried to get to higher ground. Why do people want to get to higher ground because of an earthquake? It is because earthquakes in the water can generate giant waves known as tsunamis which can cause a lot of destruction. This earthquake did not create any tsunamis.
In 2004, an earthquake of magnitude 9.1 off the coast of Indonesia caused tsunamis which killed over 200,000 people in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, India, Thailand, and other countries across the Indian Ocean.
