While the President of Burundi was out attending a summit in Tanzania, a military group tried to overthrow him from power. However, the attempt failed, and Pierre Nkurunziza (image) is back in Burundi and is still the president of the nation. Many people in Burundi have been upset with Nkurunziza. He has been the president of the nation since 2005 (for 2 presidential terms). He recently announced that he will stand for the upcoming presidential elections for a third term. According to the constitution of the country, a person can be a president only for 2 terms. Many protests have been held in the nation asking for Nkurunziza not to stand for elections again.
Burundi came out of a 12-year-long civil war in 2005. The war was mainly a fight between the Hutus and the Tutsis, two of the prominent tribes in the country. An estimated 300,000 Burundians were killed in the conflict.
The capital of Burundi is Bujumbura.
