Forbes, an American magazine, comes out with a list of the world’s richest people every year. The richest person in the world once again is Bill Gates, an American who co-founded the software company Microsoft and runs the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Gates held the title last year as well. He has held the top spot for 16 of the past 21 years. He is worth US$79 billion. Carlos Slim Helu, a Mexican in the telecommunications industry, was in the number 2 spot with US$77 billion. Slim had held the 2nd spot last year as well. There were 1,645 billionaires (in US dollars) in the world last year. This year, the number has shot up to 1,826 from 70 countries. The United States has the largest number with 536, followed by China (213), Germany (103 ), India (90), and Russia (88). The nation Guatemala has a person on this list for the first time. The youngest billionaire is Evan Spiegel, the 24 year old co-founder of the the mobile messaging app Snapchat. The American state of California has 131 billionaires.
