When you say Italy, the words that come to mind are pizza, gelato, Amalfi Coast, Pompeii, Venice, Leonardo da Vinci, Mona Lisa, Colosseum, Leaning Tower of Pisa, and more! The pizza as we know it today (with the cheese and tomato sauce) was created in the Italian city of Naples. Gelato is the Italian style ice cream that many of us love to eat. Venice, known as the “City of Canals”, is considered to be one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in the world. The Amalfi Coast is a spectacular stretch of coastline in southern Italy. Pompeii was a Roman city that was buried under layers of ash when a volcano erupted in 79 CE. The city was forgotten about and rediscovered over 1,500 years later. The city was well-preserved and gave us a glimpse of what life was like at that time. Leonardo Da Vinci is the famous Italian painter, mathematician, sculptor, inventor, and writer. One of the world’s most famous artworks, the Mona Lisa, was his painting. Colosseum is the largest amphitheatre in the world built in the first century CE. It is located in Rome, the capital of Italy. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is the bell tower known for its tilt to one side.
