Protests in Hong Kong

Tens of thousands of people are protesting in Hong Kong, China. Many of them are students. They are upset with China’s decision to limit the choice of candidates who will stand for the next election to select Hong Kong’s leader.

Hong Kong is referred to as a “Special Administrative Region” of China. It was under the control of the British for about 150 years, and was returned to China in 1997. China had agreed that Hong Kong will be allowed some amount of self-rule for 50 years. Hong Kong’s election to select the region’s next leader is expected to be in 2017. The people want no restrictions on who gets to run for the leader’s post.
