The FIESA 2014 International Sand Sculpture Festival, one of the largest annual sand sculpture festivals in the world, opened on May 25 and will end in October. Many sculptors from around the globe had gathered in the Algarve, Portugal to create nearly 70 sand scenes. The festival has a main theme each year, and this year’s is “music”. Many famous musicians, such as Lady Gaga, The Beatles, and Mozart, have been carved out of sand. Some sculptures are 12 meters (40 feet) high. Some scenes depict music from around the world, and some express the origins of music. The sculptors used about 40,000 tons of sand. You can watch a video of the festival from 3 years ago here.
