The 2014 Australian Open, a world famous tennis tournament, took place from January 13 to 26 in Melbourne, Australia. Stanislas Wawrinka (from Switzerland) beat Rafael Nadal (from Spain) to win the men’s singles title. The women’s singles winner was Li Na (from China). She beat Dominika Cibulková (from Slovakia). Some matches played at the tournament were in very hot weather with temperatures above 40°C (104°F). A few players found the high temperatures intolerable and suffered from the heat with cramps, and one even fainted.
The Australian Open is held every January and is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments (the other three are the French Open, the US Open, and Wimbledon).
