Tajikistan held presidential elections and Emomali Rakhmon won another 7-year term. He has been the president of the country for almost 20 years. Tajikistan used to be part of the country Soviet Union and became an independent country in 1991. Dushanbe is the capital of the country and Tajik is the official language. About half of the country’s population is less than 25 years of age. (For comparison, in Japan, about a quarter of the country’s population is less than 25 years of age.) Tajikistan is a landlocked country full of mountains. Over 90% of its area is mountainous!
