Weekend change in Yemen

From August 15 onwards, a weekend in Yemen is Friday and Saturday instead of Thursday and Friday. Yemen has made this change because a large part of the world works Monday thru Friday, and some countries close to Yemen work Sunday thru Thursday. This change will allow Yemen to have more working days that overlap with these other nations.

Friday is a holy day for Muslims, and special prayers are held on this day. Many countries, such as Yemen, where Islam is the official religion of the country, have Friday as part of their weekend.  Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Jordan, United Arab Emirates, and Qatar also have a Friday-Saturday weekend. Oman and Saudi Arabia , two of Yemen’s neighbors, changed their weekend from Thursday-Friday to Friday-Saturday just a few months ago.

Did you know?

There is only one country in the world where the weekend is still Thursday-Friday, and that is Afghanistan.

Mocha coffee beans were originally cultivated in Yemen, and the beans got their name because they were shipped from Yemen’s port city, Mocha.
