Your weight in gold

Officials in the city of Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), have launched a new one-month program called ‘Your Weight in Gold’. The program’s aim is for the city’s citizens to lead a healthier lifestyle by exercising and eating nutritious food. Overweight people could sign up for the program on July 19. For every kilogram (2.2 pounds) of weight a person loses by August 16, the person will get one gram of gold. A person has to lose at least 2 kg in order to qualify. This isn’t the first time Dubai has launched a program to get its citizens into shape. Two years ago, a program was launched called “Yallah Walk”, where new walking paths were created around the city and people were encouraged to walk with rewards. According to the CIA World Factbook, 32.7% of adults in the UAE are obese. Obesity for an adult is defined as having a Body Mass Index of 30 or more, where Body Mass Index is a calculation of a person’s body weight (in kg) divided by the person’s height squared (in meters).
