New emir in Qatar

The ruler of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, has stepped down  and passed on the monarchy to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The monarch of Qatar, known as the emir, is the head of the country. Sheikh Hamad is 61 years old and became the emir 18 years ago. Sheikh Tamim is 33 years old. Qatar is a small country in the Persian Gulf. The country is very wealthy because of its natural gas and oil. In fact, according the the CIA World Factbook, Qatar has the highest per capita income in the world of US$102,800.

The flag of Qatar (see image) uses the colors maroon and white. The story of the maroon color is that it used to be red. However, the red on the flag, exposed to the sun, faded to maroon. This new color eventually became the official color.
