Pay by weight

Samoa Air, an airline based out of Samoa, has changed its pricing strategy for plane tickets. You don’t pay per person travelling or per bag. You now pay according to weight, which is the combined weight of the passenger and the baggage. You buy a ticket based on an estimate of the weight, and the exact weight is determined when you check in at the airport.

Samoa is a little island country in the Pacific Ocean. It is part of the Samoan Islands, which also include American Samoa, a group of islands that are a territory of the United States.  The capital of Samoa is Apia. Samoa is just west of the International Date Line (IDL), so it is one of the first countries to welcome the next day. American Samoa, just next to Samoa, is east of the IDL, so it is one of the last areas to welcome the next day. Even though Samoa and American Samoa are right next to each other, the current time difference between the two is 25 hours!

Did you know?

On April 1, 2011, Air New Zealand played a prank by declaring that it is going to charge based on weight to fly on the airline.
