Time magazine named US President Barack Obama its “Person of the Year” for 2012. This is the second time Obama has been given this honor, the first being in 2008. Obama has been the president of the country since 2009, and was recently re-elected. Two others who were close contenders were Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, and Malala Yousafzai, a 14-year old Pakistani girl who stood up for the rights of girls’ education in her country. The Person of the Year award by Time Magazine has been awarded for over 80 years. The award is given to people or things that significantly influence the world, for better or worse. There have been some interesting winners in the past – “You” (in other words, all of us), “Computer”, and “Planet Earth”.
