On September 13, the city of New York became the first city in the United States to ban restaurants, movie theaters, sports stadiums, food stalls, and other eating places from selling sugary drinks (such as Coke, Fanta, Sprite, and sweetened tea drinks) of sizes greater than 16 ounces. Fruit juices (with at least 70% juice) and milk shakes (with more than half milk) don’t fall under this regulation even though some of them have sugar. Diet drinks also don’t fall under this regulation.
If you really want a greater than 16 oz sized sugary soda in New York City, you can buy two drinks since there is no rule for the number of drinks you can buy. You can also go to the convenience stores or grocery stores since they are still allowed to sell them.
This new regulation will go into effect in March of next year. There is a reason the city of New York has come up with this new ban for large sized drinks. About two out of every three adults in America fall into the overweight category. Weight gain has also become a problem amongst kids. Being overweight can lead to various health problems in people.
Not everybody likes this new rule. Some restaurant owners have complained that it is not just the sugary drinks that have made people gain weight, but also other food items such as candy, cakes, french fries, and burgers. They find this rule unfair, and might contest it in the courts.
New York City has been a leader in trying to make America more healthy. Since 2008, fast food restaurants in the City have had to post calorie information for all the food items on their menus. This rule has brought about a nation wide law in the United States. Soon all chain restaurants across the US will have to post calorie information for the food they sell.
A landmark of New York City is the Statue of Liberty. The statue was a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States.
Here is a video about how much sugar there is in a can of soda.
