National emergency in Sierra Leone

So many people in Sierra Leone have been infected with cholera that the country’s government has declared a national emergency and is asking for international help. Cholera is a disease that causes an infection in a person’s small intestine, leading to severe diarrhea and vomiting. It usually spreads through food or water that is contaminated with a bacteria that causes cholera. Since January, over 13,000 people have been sick with cholera in the country. The disease is curable, but the hospitals in Sierra Leone don’t have enough medicines to handle all the sick people. Some countries and international organizations have offered to help. Sierra Leone is famous for its diamonds. The Star of Sierra Leone is the name of one of the largest gem-quality diamonds ever discovered.
