Some new leaders

On July 24, John Atta Mills, the president of Ghana, passed away because of health problems. The vice president of the country, John Dramani Mahama, has now become the president. Ghana is one of the world’s largest cocoa producers.

Peru’s president selected Juan Jimenez, a human rights lawyer, as the new prime minister of the country. The last prime minister stepped down because he was criticized for using force against protesters who were against a new gold mining project in the country. The people were complaining because of fear that the mines would destroy their water supplies. Peru is one of the world’s largest copper producers.

Pranab Mukherjee was elected to be India’s next president. India’s president is elected by the country’s state legislatures and members of parliament. India is one of the world’s largest tea producers.
