On July 24, China established a new city called Sansha. The city is located on the tiny Yongxing Island (also known as Woody Island and Phu Lam Island), just over 200 miles (300 km) from mainland China. Yongxing Island is part of an island chain called Paracel Islands in the South China Sea. Sansha is about a square mile in size and has about a thousand people living on it. The city has a bank, a supermarket, a post office, and a hospital. However, it is so small that its airport runway doesn’t fit and the airstrip has to be extended into the sea. The issue with Sansha City is that it is on an island chain that is also claimed by Vietnam. There are a few island chains in the South China Sea that multiple countries (China, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, and Vietnam) claim as their own.
