Cheetah, the robot

A robot called “Cheetah” has been built that is the fastest robot to run on legs. The robot runs like the animal (any guesses?) cheetah, and was running at a speed of 18 miles per hour (about 30 kmph). Cheetah currently runs on a treadmill in the laboratory, but the scientists plan on getting it out and about later this year. The previous record of the fastest legged robot was set 23 years ago by a robot in the US called Planar Biped. It had two legs and could run at a speed of 13 mph (20 kmph). Cheetah has been built in Massachusetts, USA by a robotics design company called Boston Dynamics. You can watch Cheetah running here.

Cheetah (the animal, not the robot) is the fastest mammal on land. It can run at speeds of up to 70 mph (113 kmph).

Usain Bolt, a Jamaican, currently has the title of “the fastest man on Earth”, because he holds the world record in the men’s 100 meters race. His top speed for this race was nearly 28 mph (45 kmph).
